Friday, October 17 | Dinner 5:00–6:30 pm | Keynote 7:00 pm | Yachats Commons
Join us for a delicious mushroom-themed dinner by Big Dogs BBQ, followed by an inspiring keynote presentation from renowned mycologist Daniel Winkler.
In his richly illustrated talk, “Fruits of the Forest,” Daniel will introduce the Pacific Northwest’s most beloved edible mushrooms—chanterelles, hedgehogs, king boletes, morels, bear’s head, and cauliflower mushrooms. Known for being easier to identify, these mushrooms help beginners overcome “fungophobia” and discover the joys of foraging, sometimes right in their own backyards.
Daniel will also touch on more advanced edibles like culinary truffles and trickier mushrooms that require experience for safe identification. Throughout his presentation, you’ll learn:
How to confidently identify edible mushrooms while avoiding dangerous look-alikes
Best practices for harvesting, transporting, preparing, and storing wild mushrooms
How habitat and seasonality are the keys to finding prime mushrooms
This keynote also weaves in fascinating cultural insights from Daniel’s ethno-mycological research and his Mushroaming adventure travels, all tied together with new knowledge from his book “Fruits of the Forest – Handbook to Edible Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest.”
